Evelyn Reid Syphax Scholarship Fund
This fund is established in honor of Evelyn Reid Syphax, an esteemed member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., who was a pioneering educator, civil rights leader, real estate executive, and community advocate in Arlington, Virginia. The scholarship commemorates her lifelong commitment to equity in education, desegregation, early childhood learning, and the empowerment of Black youth and women. It aims to support students who demonstrate leadership, dedication to social justice and community service, and the resilience and values embodied by Mrs. Syphax.
o Reside in Virginia
o Demonstrate a commitment to community involvement and service, in addition to their work in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., which includes advancing equity in education or civil rights
o Pursue a degree in any field
o Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 at the time of the award
o Preference is given to those with ties to Arlington or Alexandria, Virginia.
o Preference is given to those who attend a historically Black college or university.
The application must include a personal essay reflecting on how the candidate’s goals and pursuits align with Mrs. Syphax’s commitment to education, action in civil rights, youth advocacy and success in the business world.
